The Driver’s License Department is responsible for the processing of Driver’s Licenses, Instruction Permits and Identification Cards. These may be new to the state; first time MN, duplicates or renewals.
In compliance with the FEDERAL REAL ID ACT, Minnesota Residents now have the option of applying for a Real or Enhanced Driver’s License, along with the traditional Standard License. Beginning May 7, 2025, a Real or Enhanced Driver’s License will be required for domestic flights, or to enter Federal facilities unless one presents a passport (or other federally recognized identification). Please prepare for your travel by checking with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) at www.tsa.gov/contact.

STATE EXAMINERS/DRIVER’S LICENSE TESTING / PAYMENT OF REINSTATEMENT FEES
The State Driver’s License Examiners are available at the Jackson location the first (1st) Wednesday of each month.
- Written knowledge tests are offered from 10:00 – 11:15 a.m., and may be scheduled on line at drive.mn.gov, or by calling (651) 284-1234.
- Commercial and motorcycle knowledge tests are also offered from 10 to 11:15 on a first come, first served basis. No appointments are required for these tests.
- Class D driving tests may be scheduled online.
- The Examiners will also be accepting reinstatement fees.
MINNESOTA DL, INSTRUCTION PERMIT OR ID CARD RENEWAL
Please have current MN Driver’s License, Instruction Permit or ID Card; Social Security Card and documents showing any name change.
**Applicants under 18 years of age must have parent or guardian signature, (or) parent or guardian signature must be notarized.
COMMERCIAL DRIVERS
Please have current MN Commercial Driver’s License, (certified birth certificate or passport if not already on record) and current health certificate if updating. You will also complete the self-certification form.
NEW TO MN RESIDENTS
Please have your current License, Social Security Card and any required Identity Documents. Again, please visit drive.mn.gov for all Drivers License related information.
