Permits to Purchase and Carry
The Jackson County Sheriff's office facilitates the permitting of the purchase and carrying of handguns in Jackson County.
Permit to Purchase - There is no charge for a Permit to Purchase a Handgun. The Permit to Purchase/Transfer expires 1 year after the issue date.
- In the City of Jackson, MN; Alpha, MN; Wilder, MN; and/or in rural Jackson County, MN, turn your application into the Jackson County Sheriff's Office.
- In the City of Lakefield, MN, turn your application into the Lakefield Police Department.
- In the City of Heron Lake, MN, turn your application into the Heron Lake Police Department.
- The applicant must appear in person to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office with the completed application.
- Applicant must present a current, valid driver's license, state identification card or the photo page of their passport along with a legible copy.
- All residents of Jackson County, MN or out-of-state residents turn the application into the Jackson County Sheriff's Office.
- The applicant must appear in person and apply in the county in which they reside. Out of state residents can apply at any sheriff's office.
- The applicant must have taken an authorized firearms training course within one year prior to the application.
- The applicant must present a completed application, signed and dated, on the date presented.
- The applicant must present the original certificate of completed authorized firearms training along with a legible copy. Applicant must also present a current, valid driver's license, state identification card or the photo page of their passport along with a legible copy. If renewing, the current permit along with a legible copy must be presented.
- CASH IN EXACT CHANGE, MONEY ORDERS OR CASHIER'S CHECKS, AND CREDIT/DEBIT CARDS ACCEPTED. Personal checks will not be accepted.
- The fee for a new permit is $80.
- The fee for a renewal is $60.
- Active military or retired military fee is $25. You must show proof of service, such as your DD-214 and/or current military ID card.
- The Permit to Carry a Handgun expires 5 years after the issue date.
Applicants are reminded that the Sheriff's Office has 30 days to process and mail a permit or to deny the application. In the case of a denial, the permit fee WILL NOT be refunded.
